If your landlord wants you out.

Your landlord CANNOT
  • Evict you themselves, change the locks, or cut your heat or power.
  • Remove your belongings. Only the sheriff can enforce an eviction.
What actually has to happen
  • A proper written notice, then an application to the Landlord and Tenant Board.
  • A hearing where you have the right to attend and be heard.
Do this
  • Do not move out just because you got a notice.
  • For unpaid rent, you can usually cancel the notice by paying what is owed.
  • Go to the hearing. Call a community legal clinic, free.
